For ease we need to settle on one spelling to index all the variants.
Suggestion - that we use McCosham for the catalogue (page titles etc) but include the variant as transcribed from the individual records in each persons page. It is important that people searching can find what it is they have as well as illustrating the changes over time and by different recorders.
McCosham seems to be the most common latterly
McCoshim ~ McCossom ~ McCoshan ~ McCoshen ~ McCoshin ~ McCoshean
(more mcCosham families notes)
The McCosham family has been extensively researched by D Ferguson and we are very grateful for him sharing his hard work, which is being combined with the rest of the Auchindrain research.
The lore from the Museum was that the McCoshams were one of the families who were evicted when Killean was sold. The story goes that the people were taken in by communities along the Glen, but then moved on, and that the McCoshams were given a steading, by the tenants, to the north east of the Township, across the burn.

However - the research is showing that this is possibly somewhat fanciful.
Killean was sold in 1766 (by the Duke of Argyll to Captain James Campbell, (of Killian, Perthshire and Inverneill) and the tenants were cleared (according to autobiography of John MacDonald who was teaching there1), but the McCoshams were at Killean registering marriages and births in the 1770's, and were on the Duke of Argyll Census 1779 for Killean.
Auchindrain was also sold in 1766 by the executors of James McPhun who had owned it, and the Duke bought it. According to Munro family lore the tenancy was offered to a Munro of Killean - and this fits with the births of Martin Munro and Janet McKellar's children. Other Munro's came to the township in following years.
McCosham girls certainly married into the township during this time, and then Donald McCosham 1776-1864 joined, later to become a tenant.
